Instructions for Faculty and Office or Hospital Staff

Welcome to the Krueger University Medical Scholars Program. Thank you for your interest in participating as a faculty member (Preceptor). Your willingness to become a preceptor for high school students in our area will allow these students to enhance their education and better prepare them for their future careers in healthcare should they choose to follow that path. The students selected for this program have already demonstrated their interest and aptitude in biosciences by taking related courses in health, anatomy and physiology, and are ready to find out what it’s really like to do what you do in saving lives every day.

To sign up as a preceptor, please fill out this form and send it by email to medicalscholars363@gmail.com.

Go to the Krueger Medical Scholars Calendar.  Select the times and dates when you would be available to meet with students at your office or at the hospital. If the students are meeting you at the hospital, in the description section of the appointment, please write in where exactly they should meet you. You may choose whatever time slots you wish. Most people seem to like 10-12AM, or 2-4PM. You could choose an entire day, or just an afternoon if you wish. But, it should be a less densely scheduled time when you will actually be able to interact with them.

Students can then go into the same calendar, choose what physician they want to shadow, click on that appointment time and enter their name, email and phone number in the Description area.

If your schedule is very busy, the students will be joined by a retired physician-host, called a “professor,” if you will, who will be there to explain to the students what is happening and allow them to interact with patients either before or during the visit if the patients agree. This is done to avoid you having to interrupt your busy schedule to explain things to the students. There are times when a Professor may not be available. Or, you may choose not to have a “Professor” there by indicating “No Professor” in the Description area, but then, if you do that, we request that you and/or your staff please make time to interact with students. Afterwards, the students will provide feedback on their experience there and whether it was worthwhile for them.

Please be aware that some of the students may be more interested in shadowing your nurse or your PA or NP, and not so much the doctor. Let them choose whatever experience makes the most sense to them based on what career path they wish to follow assuming they have already decided that.

Please recognize that these are high school students who have not yet learned the language of medicine. Try not to talk over their heads or use words they won’t understand. Be patient with them in answering their questions. Whatever you talk about with them try to make it interesting, even if you think it’s boring because you do it every day.

If you have to urgently leave the office or hospital during the time when students are there, or if you cannot be there for whatever reason, please ask your staff to let us know or let the students know so they can be dismissed and rescheduled. Or, ask your partner to join them if possible. We would prefer not to have students just spend time there with nothing to do.

Again, thank you so much for participating in this important program that hopefully will provide a positive experience for these students as well as for you and your office staff. We want this to be an interesting and enjoyable early introduction to medical care, enhance their education in the biosciences, and also increase the chance that at least some of the students will pursue a medical career in our local area.

Please, be sure to give a copy of this to your office or hospital staff, so they are aware of your participation and so they know what to expect when the students arrive.

If there are any questions, please call Greg Warth, MD at 757-816-8399, or email to medicalscholars363@gmail.com.
